Galatians 6:9- “In due season we shall reap if we faint not.”
I was given the opportunity to speak at a women’s conference back in May and they gave me Galatians 6:9 to speak from because that was their theme. Little did I know when I was preparing this back in April that I would need it myself for some things I am presently going through.
Initially, I based my message on my own personal journey with my weight and some of my convictions but the principles apply to virtually any situation you may be battling with or going through.
FIRST- A) TIL THE GROUND- PULL UP THE WEEDS. GET IT READY!!! –
1. Make a choice to start. That is easy- EXECUTION AND CONSISTENCY ARE HARD
2. The work on the front end is the hardest- to simply just get started.
GETTING RID OF BAD HABITS IS HARD!– NO ONE WANTS TO HAVE BAD HABITS. NO ONE WAKES UP AND SAYS, TODAY, I WANT TO ACHIEVE LESS THAN GOD CREATED ME FOR. I DON’T WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL TODAY OR ANY DAY! I WANT TO BE MEDIOCRE…NO ONE INTENTIONALLY SAYS THESE THINGS. YOU DON’T REALLY WANT TO DAILY PERFORM THE BAD HABITS. NO ONE WANTS TO BE SUB-PAR. PAUL SAID IT BEST IN ROMANS 7:15-20
For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
Romans 7:15-20 The Message (MSG)
14-16 I can anticipate the response that is coming: “I know that all God’s commands are spiritual, but I’m not. Isn’t this also your experience?” Yes. I’m full of myself—after all, I’ve spent a long time in sin’s prison. What I don’t understand about myself is that I decide one way, but then I act another, doing things I absolutely despise. So if I can’t be trusted to figure out what is best for myself and then do it, it becomes obvious that God’s command is necessary.
17-20 But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.
WE ALL HAVE BAD HABITS. ONE OF MY BAD HABITS IS PROCRASTINATION AND OVER EATING-GLUTTONY. THINK ABOUT YOUR BAD HABITS.
I HAVE LEARNED THAT BAD HABITS CAN CAUSE:
1. SET BACKS
3. LACK OF PRODUCTIVITY, WHICH WILL CAUSE LACK OF HARVEST
4. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY MOTIVATION TO DO BETTER
BREAKING BAD HABITS IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. I would always tell my students that yes, things are hard and that hard does not mean impossible it just reminds you try harder. IF YOU WANT TO REACH YOUR GOALS YOU HAVE TO BREAK THE BAD HABITS. (1 CORINTHIANS 10:13)…SCRIPTURE OF ENCOURAGEMENT
1 CORINTHIANS 10:13
3 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
B) PLANT THE SEEDS
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. YOU SHALL HAVE THEM FOR FOOD.
NOW, I KNOW THIS SCRIPTURE IS ABOUT PLANTING SEEDS WITH THE FOOD BEING THE OUTCOME BUT GOD ALLOWS US TO USE SCRIPTURE IN EVERY AREA OF OUR LIVES. I PICKED THIS SCRIPTURE BECAUSE WHERE IT SAYS I HAVE GIVEN YOU EVERY PLANT YIELDING SEED TO MEAN THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US EVERY TOOL WE NEED TO REACH SUCCESS IN EVERY GOAL WE HAVE AND IN EVERY PURPOSE HE HAS PLACED IN US.
THE CRAZY THING ABOUT SEEDS IS THAT YOU PLANT THEM AND THEY DO NOT ALWAYS GROW. WE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER IN MATTHEW 13. WE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT IT FROM THE SEED VIEWPOINT.
On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. 2 And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
3 Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. 6 But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. 8 But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
WHEN YOU PLANT A SEED IN YOUR JOURNEY, IN THIS CASE, ESTABLISHING GOOD HABITS, IT MAY TAKE A WHILE TO SEE RESULTS. IN OUR QUEST TO BUILD A FOUNDATION OF GOOD HABITS YOU WILL FIND THAT SOME OF YOUR EFFORTS WILL YIELD NOTHING. YOU WILL HAVE WORKED TIRELESSLY FOR LITTLE TO NO RESULT.
I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS IN MY NEW FOUND HEALTH JOURNEY and in my career. I WOULD WORK OUT 5 DAYS A WEEK FOR AN HOUR OR MORE AND SEE LITTLE TO NO RESULTS OR
EXTREMELY SLOW OUTCOMES FOR ALL THE WORK I WAS DOING. I HAD TO NOT GET DISCOURAGED BUT CHANGE BY STRATEGY. I HAVE TO KEEP BUILDING GOOD HABITS BECAUSE I HAVE A LOT TO BREAK. IT WILL NEVER BE JUST CHANGING ONE THING THAT WILL MAKE THE PLAN FALL INTO PLACE. IT IS CONSTANTLY PLANTING THOSE SEEDS OF GOOD HABITS AND EVENTUALLY ONE WILL CLICK AND TAKE ROOT FOR YOU AND GROW YOU TREMENDOUSLY.
C) NURTURE THE SEED! CONSISTENCY
GALATIANS 7:7-8 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW BUT ONLY IF YOU SOW IT CONSISTENTLY!
YOU CANNOT EXPECT TO LOSE WEIGHT, BUILD A BUSINESS, ACHIEVE A MASTERS, Ph. D., OR HAVE CHILDREN OVERNIGHT. YOU CANNOT DO SOMETHING TOWARDS A GOAL ONE TIME AND EXPECT THE OUTCOME YOU WANT. IT TAKES TIME AND IT TAKES CONSISTENCY! MAKING THE DECISION TO START CAN BE THE EASIEST PART BUT EXECUTION AND CONSISTENCY ARE THE MOST DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN. IN YOU CONSISTENCY YOU WILL SEE RESULTS! IN YOUR CONSISTENCY YOU LEARN VALUABLE LESSONS LIKE WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT TO DO.
THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT CONSISTENCY:
1. CONSISTENCY CAN BE DISCOURAGING BUT RESULTS ARE INEVITABLE WITH CONSISTENCY.
2. DIFFERENT SEEDS REQUIRE DIFFERENT MAINTENANCE AND LEVELS OF CONSISTENCY.
3. YOU CAN BECOME STAGNANT EVEN WITHIN CONSISTENCY. Workout term- PLATEAU
BUT IN THAT STAGNANT FEELING PLACE WITHIN YOUR CONSISTENCY YOU HAVE TO CONSTANTLY KEEP MOVING: SETTING NEW GOALS, TRYING NEW THINGS. BE CONSISTENT IN THE TIMES OF PLATEAU ALWAYS SEEKING GOD AND SEARCHING FOR NEW WAYS TO KEEP BETTERING YOU AND MOVING FORWARD.
D) WORK AND WAIT AND WORK AND WAIT…AND WORK AND WAIT.
IN EVERY JOURNEY, MAY IT BE SPIRITUAL OR PHYSICAL, YOU ARE CONSTANTLY IN STATE OF ADJUSTMENT. PULLING OUT WEEDS, GETTING RID OF HARMFUL STUFF, GETTING RID OF WHAT DIDN’T WORK AND KEEPING WHAT DID. YOU ARE ALWAYS ADJUSTING THE GAME and process.
WAITING, TO ME, IS THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE AND AGONIZING PROCESS IN THE WORLD! MUCH LIKE HAVING A BABY. THROUGH ALL THE GROWTH, WAITING, AND PAIN SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL EMERGES. THEN THE GROWTH, WAITING, AND PAIN PROCESS STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN AS THEY GROW THROUGH THEIR DIFFERENT PHASES IN LIFE!
WHEN WE WERE IN WORSHIP ABOUT A MONTH AGO GOD DROPPED THIS IN MY SPIRIT– WHEN WE FEEL LIKE OUR LIFE IS STAGNANT THEN WE NEED OT MAKE SURE OUR SPIRIT IS STILL MOVING. GOD MAY HAVE YOU IN A PLACE OF “WAIT” SO YOU CAN PREPARE AND HE CAN PREPARE YOU FOR WHAT IS COMING.
YOUR BODY MAY BE STILL BUT YOUR SPIRIT CAN STILL BE MOVING (PRISON STORY- PAUL AND SILAS ACTS 16:16-40 AND JOSEPH IN PRISON). SATAN TRIES TO USE THAT WAIT PERIOD TO CONVINCE YOU THAT YOU ARE NOT IN OR DOING GODS WILL BUT WE MUST PRAISE AND WORSHIP AND PRAY THE MOST IN THOSE TIMES. THE WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD PUSHED PASSED HER BODY’S WEAKNESS THEN REACHED OUT TO GOD.
WHEN MOM PASSED MY BODY WAS WEAK, MY MIND WAS WEAK BUT I FOCUSED ON GOD AND MADE IT THROUGH.
REMEMBER, YOUR SPIRITUALITY IS LIKE A MUSCLE. IT MUST BE WORKED, TONED, STRENGTHENED, AND PUSHED TO ITS LIMITS JUST LIKE YOUR PHYSICAL MAN. WHEN YOU BUILD YOUR SPIRIT MAN IT WILL GIVE YOUR PHYSICAL MAN STRENGTH IN THOSE DOWN AND DISCOURAGING TIMES. YOU WILL REALIZE AT THE END OF THAT SEASON THAT YOUR BODY WAS MOVING BY FAITH AND FROM THE STRENGTH YOU BUILT UP IN YOUR SPIRIT MAN DURING YOUR SEASON OF WAIT. NEW DOORS WILL LITERALLY BE OPEN TO YOU. OLD GOALS WILL BE MET AND NEW ONES CAN BE MADE. AFTER THE WAIT THE SCRIPTURE COMES TO MIND BEHOLD OLD THINGS SHALL PASS AWAY BEHOLD ALL THINGS ARE MADE NEW (2 COR 5:17)
2 Corinthians 5:1-10 (The Message (MSG)
5 1-5 For instance, we know that when these bodies of ours are taken down like tents and folded away, they will be replaced by resurrection bodies in heaven—God-made, not handmade—and we’ll never have to relocate our “tents” again. Sometimes we can hardly wait to move—and so we cry out in frustration. Compared to what’s coming, living conditions around here seem like a stopover in an unfurnished shack, and we’re tired of it! We’ve been given a glimpse of the real thing, our true home, our resurrection bodies! The Spirit of God whets our appetite by giving us a taste of what’s ahead. He puts a little of heaven in our hearts so that we’ll never settle for less.
6-8 That’s why we live with such good cheer. You won’t see us drooping our heads or dragging our feet! Cramped conditions here don’t get us down. They only remind us of the spacious living conditions ahead. It’s what we trust in but don’t yet see that keeps us going. Do you suppose a few ruts in the road or rocks in the path are going to stop us? When the time comes, we’ll be plenty ready to exchange exile for homecoming.
9-10 But neither exile nor homecoming is the main thing. Cheerfully pleasing God is the main thing, and that’s what we aim to do, regardless of our conditions. Sooner or later we’ll all have to face God, regardless of our conditions. We will appear before Christ and take what’s coming to us as a result of our actions, either good or bad.
I pray today, or whatever season you are in, that you embrace the process and trust God. He has a plan for you even when things are not making sense to us they make sense to God.
